IT’S not only the senior squad who are preparing to get their league campaign underway this weekend, with Hugh McKendry’s Olympic squad also returning to action.

Promotion for the first team also means a step up for Hugh’s young side this season, as they prepare themselves to compete in the NIFL Premiership Development League.

Their opening game is a reverse of the senior fixture, as they travel on Saturday to take on Warrenpoint Town (2pm).

It has been a positive pre-season for the Olympic side, with a mixture of tests coming their way.

Boss Hugh McKendry explains: “Our first outing was a victory against Connor FC.

“After that we travelled to Cookstown, to take on Cookstown FC. This was a great test for us against a strong, senior men’s side. They ran out 2-1 winners on the day, and it was a very useful game for us.

“We followed that up with a game against Amateur League side Malachians at Inver Park and we came out on top in this one, winning 5-2.

“Our final pre-season game was against Glentoran at Inver Park, last Saturday. They brought a mixture of their under-20 and under-18 side.

“It was an eventful match, where we came from behind to win 8-3.

“The boys have been working hard during pre-season and we’re all just looking forward to the kick-off now.”

The first opportunity to see the Olympic at Inver Park this season, comes next Wednesday evening, 14th August, as the take on their Carrick Rangers counterparts. Kick-off is 7.45pm.

Everyone at the club sends their best wishes to Hugh and his young side as they begin another campaign.
