Davy McDaid’s move to Ballymena confirmed

We can confirm that Davy McDaid has left the club to join Ballymena United for an undisclosed fee.

The 31-year-old striker arrived at Inver Park in the January 2018 transfer window and had been Larne’s current longest-serving player.

As part of the transfer, Leroy Millar has been released early from his contract at the Showgrounds, and joins up with his new team-mates with immediate effect.

Former Derry City and Coleraine striker McDaid scored a total of 84 goals in a Larne shirt over a four and half year period, with his final strikes coming on the final day of the league season, as Larne ran out 2-1 winners away to Crusaders.

He also helped to write his name in the club’s history books, scoring our first ever goal in Europe after just three minutes of the First Qualifying Round tie away to Bala Town last July.

He leaves the club having won the Bluefin Sports Championship, two County Antrim Shields and back-to-back European qualifications.

Manager Tiernan Lynch explained the reason behind allowing the striker to move on.

“I understand supporters being disappointed when someone like Davy moves on,” he said.

“Davy scored a lot of goals for us and I’d like to think we were good for Davy as well, with him having found a home at Larne a large spell of his career. He explained he wanted to be more sure of game time and as I’ve said before we respect and understand that.

“Like everyone else we are working with a budget and when one player leaves that allows to bring someone else in.

“Davy goes with our best wishes and we sincerely thank him for everything he’s done in a Larne shirt.”

As part of the transfer Leroy Millar joins the Invermen immediately, something which the manager is delighted about.

“Leroy had signed for the club and was due to join with us once his contract ended, at the start of August,” he explained.

“Having Leroy able to train with us and be available for our European games is fantastic and I thank David Jeffrey and Ballymena for their co-operation.”
