Foyle Belles inflict Ladies first league defeat

Report by Sam Johnston

Larne Ladies suffered their first league defeat of the season away to a strong Foyle Belles side, coming out on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat.

William Noble’s side began the game on the front foot however and with five minutes gone, Marion Gage almost recreated her goal from a week earlier, but her 45-yard free-kick fell narrowly wide of the post.

The Larne defence were playing a very high line and this allowed the Belles’ strikers to break through on a number of occasions, however Leanne Glass made a number of superb saves to keep the game scoreless at the break.

Five minutes into the second half and Foyle Belles did manage to grab the lead. A mistake at the back allowed a Foyle Belles forward in to smash the ball past Glass, who was off her line. With 60 minutes gone, the home side then scored their second. A Glass and McKenzie miss-communication at the back saw a Belles winger nip in and take the ball to slot home.

With 15 minutes left to play Foyle Belles made it 3-0, as the home side’s winger fired the ball past Glass to leave her with no chance.

Larne get on the attack immediately with substitutes Abbie Quinn and Jennifer Montgomery linking up well to create a chance, but this was saved by the home goalkeeper.

To the credit the Inver Women kept fighting until the final whistle and despite conceding three goals the player of the match was goalkeeper Leanne Glass, who had a great game. Congratulations also go to Abbi Quinn who made her first team debut.
