As we approach another historic night at Inver Park on Thursday, we spoke to Club Captain Jeff Hughes ahead of the UEFA Conference League Third Qualifying Round 2nd Leg against Pacos De Ferreira.

After a 4-0 defeat in the first leg in Portugal, the Invermen know the quality of opposition that they are coming up against.

Speaking about the first leg, Jeff said: “We always knew it was going to be a tough game. They managed to come 4thlast season in a top European league and it was easy to see the quality that they possessed.

“For the majority of the first half, I felt that we were right in the game but we got punished for that one mistake on the brink of half-time, that happens in football. I think overall, 4-0 was a harsh scoreline on the night but when you make mistakes at this level, you get punished for it.”

Looking forward to tomorrow’s second leg of the tie, Hughes feels he has seen enough to believe Larne can give the home faithful something to shout about.

He added: “We won’t give up. As I mentioned before, we played well for long periods in Portugal and it was the mistakes that proved to be costly in the end. We’ve watched the game over and the Gaffer will have a game plan for us, we will be prepared for it.

“We’ve had a great journey in Europe so far and all of the lads have now got a taste for it and don’t want it to end. I’ve been told that it will be our highest capacity since the pandemic began which makes it even more special.

“Our supporters have been with us every step of the way, whether it’s been at Inver Park, the ones who have managed to travel to away games and the ones supporting us from home. With the crowd behind us, we will fight from the first whistle and look to create another historic night at Inver Park.”
