Captain’s Corner: return of fans is key for players

CLUB captain Jeff Hughes is counting down the days until fans are back at matches as he looks ahead to the Larne’s post-split fixtures, starting with Saturday’s trip to Crusaders.

The 5.30pm kick-off at Seaview will be another one which is played Behind Closed Doors, however Jeff is hopeful the situation will change before the end of the season.

Larne come into Saturday’s game on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Glentoran at the Oval, last weekend.

Speaking about the result in east Belfast, Jeff said: “I thought that we were very good in the first half on Friday night, the Oval is always a tough place to go and Glentoran are the in-form team in the country at the minute.

“Myself and the rest of the lads are frustrated at the second half performance and felt that we should have done more to see the game out, especially after such a strong first-half showing”.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s game at Seaview, Jeff said “We are looking forward to the game, it’s always a tough game against Crusaders and they seem to have hit a bit of form by being unbeaten in their last six games and being clinical in front of goal.

“I believe that we have the quality in the squad to go and improve on our last result at Seaview but it’s up to us to show that quality during Saturday’s game. We have been doing a lot of things right in recent games but we have been punished for our mistakes and haven’t capitalised on the chances that we have had.

“With everything opening up in the other aspects of life we are hoping it won’t be long to have the fans back in cheering us on for the remainder of our league campaign and the Irish Cup.

“Having the supporters behind us gives us that extra lift that can be needed when things aren’t going our way. We are looking forward to the remainder of the season and are hopeful that we can get back in to a run of form that see’s us climb the table and have a strong cup run before the end of the season”.
